From humble beginnings…
The bias of our family with the time-honoured olive trees dates back as far as the 15 th century when Guillermo Canaves purchased the remote finca Mossa in the very heart of the Sierra de Tramontana. This finca however was reorganized into two lots of land, which were to become what is now finca Mossa and finca Son Alzines, the 350 hectares of land which our family operates. Fourteen hectares are dedicated to the growing of olives.
When our ancestors had started the cultivation of our olive groves, the production of olive oil was soon in the focus - beside the production of charcoal and lime, important products in those days. The changes due to technical innovations induced our ancestors to abandon the plantation, as it no longer substantially contributed to earning the family's living.
Today and tomorrow...
The present efforts of our family to give new life to the groves, that have been in existence for hundreds of years, has lead again to the production of olive oil, to an oil that is one-of-a-kind. Its fruit ripens in a certainly privileged part of the Sierra of Mallorca, an area that was nominated World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.
For some time now, we have been extending our diversity and realize three individual mono-fraction oils, the Mallorquina, the Picual and the Arbequina.
We grow the varieties Picual and Arbequina on the plantations of our finca Son Pelay, near Lloseta, at the foot of the Tramontana mountain range. This is where all the oil production will take place in the future by means of an olive press that combines traditional methods with sophisticated techniques. Likewise it is done on our finca C’an Llobera in Ullaró, the little hamlet that lends its name to the oil brand.
The historic type Mallorquina continues to be grown on the soil of Finca Son Alzines, which is situated in the municipality of Escorca. This oil has certainly absorbed the unique character of its native region, the virtually alpine landscape.
In our efforts to reach excellence, we are seeing the entire production process through: from the care and collection of the olives, to the grinding and extraction, from the storage to the bottling of the oil. For us, these are the criteria that bring about quality and taste.
